Amidst the anticipation for Art Basel Hong Kong, an enthralling art extravaganza has already taken over Victoria Harbor. The harbor is adorned with an array of eye-catching artworks, ranging from towering sculptures to luminous displays, creating a spectacular scene on the eve of Art Basel Hong Kong.
Commissioned by a department of Hong Kong’s government, the outdoor art project, “Art@Harbour,” has introduced five new large-scale works, enriching the surroundings of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center. Additionally, a captivating new black-and-white film, “Sparrow on the Sea,” by the acclaimed Chinese artist and filmmaker Yang Fudong, will mesmerize spectators as it is projected on the facade of the contemporary art museum M+ every night. This exceptional creation is a joint endeavor by M+ and Art Basel Hong Kong.
In another striking collaboration, art collective teamLab has partnered with the city’s Leisure and Cultural Services Department to present “teamLab: Continuous,” an innovative outdoor exhibition spread across Tamar Park and the Central and Western District Promenade. This monumental exhibition features two mesmerizing components – “Resonating Life which Continues to Stand” and “Resonating Trees.” The former comprises hundreds of ovoids, symbolizing human emotions and resilience, while the latter showcases trees that emit luminous displays, metaphorically conveying the resilience and positivity ingrained in nature.
Takashi Kudo, a member of teamLab and the Communications Director for the project, elucidates the significance behind the ovoids, stating, “the ovoids are a metaphor for human emotions.” Mirroring human resilience, when these ovoids are pushed down, they radiate vibrant colors as they rebound, resonating with the profound message of embracing optimism to overcome adversities.
As the art scene in Hong Kong continues to flourish, these mesmerizing outdoor exhibitions serve as a prelude to the forthcoming Art Basel Hong Kong, generating an electrifying atmosphere that captivates art enthusiasts and the public alike. With art seamlessly integrating with the urban landscape, Victoria Harbor has transformed into a captivating open-air gallery, offering a breathtaking preview of the creativity and innovation awaiting visitors at Art Basel Hong Kong.
In conclusion, the harmonious fusion of art, nature, and resilience in these outdoor exhibitions not only amplifies the allure of Victoria Harbor but also sets the stage for the artistic extravaganza that is Art Basel Hong Kong. This convergence of creativity and urbanity has redefined the cityscape, showcasing Hong Kong as a vibrant hub for contemporary art and cultural expression.
