The bustling Nanshan district of Shenzhen, China is set to welcome Büro Ole Scheeren’s groundbreaking Scenic City Towers, which is poised to redefine the concept of urban workspace. This ambitious project, serving as the new headquarters for JD.com, China’s largest digital retailer, is strategically located in the Shenzhen Bay Super Headquarters Base.
The concept of “in-between” spaces takes center stage in Büro Ole Scheeren’s design for the Scenic City Towers. The emphasis on these spaces reflects a forward-thinking approach that seeks to blend the social fabric of urban life with nature, presenting a transformative model for working environments. Covering an expansive 2 million square feet, the development will encompass office, hotel, retail, and cultural spaces spread across two towers and an adjacent “urban spine.”
A key feature of the development is the integration of strategically positioned public and accessible spaces. This design approach aims to seamlessly merge with the surrounding urban landscape, actively encouraging vibrant urban activities. The JD Hub, situated atop the urban spine, will provide a cultural and exhibition space open to the public, further enhancing the project’s engagement with the community.
Scheduled for completion by the end of 2027, the Scenic City Towers will not only provide a dynamic new home for JD.com but also contribute to the burgeoning community of global corporations in the district. Once finished, the development will stand as a prominent addition to the Shenzhen Bay Super Headquarters Base, alongside other notable corporate players such as ZTE, CITIC, and OPPO, further enriching the area’s economic and cultural landscape.
Büro Ole Scheeren’s design choices for the Scenic City Towers come together to create a forward-thinking workspace experience that integrates nature within an urban context. By emphasizing “in-between” spaces and strategically positioning public and accessible areas, this innovative project sets a new standard for mixed-use developments in the heart of Shenzhen.
