The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued an alert about a deadly listeria outbreak in the U.S., which has already claimed the lives of two people. The outbreak, spanning a dozen states, has left a total of 28 people hospitalized. Listeria is the third-leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the country, according to the health agency.

The CDC has reported that the outbreak is linked to deli meat. “Many people in this outbreak are reporting eating meats that they had sliced at deli counters,” the CDC stated. As of now, an investigation is ongoing to determine the exact source of the outbreak.

The affected states include New York, Maryland, New Jersey, Illinois, Georgia, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin. New York and Maryland reported the highest number of cases, with 7 and 6 cases respectively, while the other states saw one or two cases each.

The CDC warned that listeria is a serious and potentially deadly bacterial infection. Individuals at a higher risk of severe illness from listeria include pregnant women, newborns, adults aged 65 or older, and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of listeria infection may include fever, muscle aches, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal symptoms.

Consumers are advised to take caution and avoid consuming deli meats or to thoroughly heat them before consumption. It is also essential to maintain proper food safety practices when handling and preparing foods, especially meats and dairy products.

The CDC stressed the importance of seeking medical care if symptoms of listeria infection are experienced, especially for those who fall under the high-risk categories.

As the investigation continues, the CDC urges the public to remain vigilant and to stay informed about the latest updates and advisories related to the listeria outbreak.
