The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to embark on an ambitious mission to launch 50 satellites over the next five years, with the goal of bolstering India’s capabilities in geo-intelligence gathering. ISRO Chairman S. Somanath made the announcement during his address at the annual Techfest organized by the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.
Somanath emphasized the need for India to significantly expand its satellite fleet to achieve its aspirations of becoming a formidable nation. He stressed that the current size of the satellite fleet is insufficient and stated that it should be at least “ten times what we have today.” The planned satellites will be strategically positioned in various orbits to enable the tracking of troop movements and capture extensive imagery of vast geographic areas.
Furthermore, Somanath outlined ISRO’s long-term vision, extending up to 2047, which encompasses ambitious objectives such as establishing a space station, undertaking manned lunar missions, and fostering economic activities on the moon. He highlighted the extensive scope for India to capitalize on space-based economic ventures and advance its space exploration endeavors.
The revelation comes in the wake of the successful Chandrayaan-3 mission, which garnered significant attention and heightened curiosity about ISRO’s forthcoming projects and initiatives. Addressing the burgeoning anticipation about the space agency’s future endeavors, Somanath underscored the comprehensive roadmap that ISRO has devised to chart its course until 2047.
