India Responds to Allegations of Plot to Murder Pro-Khalistan Elements in US and Canada

India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, recently addressed the allegations of a plot to murder pro-Khalistan elements in the United States and Canada. Jaishankar emphasized that India is a responsible and prudent country in its external affairs. The allegations emerged as Sikh separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a dual citizen of the US and Canada, was purportedly the target of the plot, as alleged by the US Department of Justice.

During a discussion with news agency ANI, Jaishankar drew a distinction between the concerns raised by the US and Canada, affirming that the two issues are not necessarily the same. He acknowledged that the Americans had shared specific details with India about the alleged plot and expressed India’s openness to addressing concerns raised by any country. The Minister stated that India takes such concerns seriously and is willing to look into any input or basis provided.

Echoing Jaishankar’s sentiments, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau affirmed that Canada is investigating the murder and intends to disclose evidence concerning possible connections between the killing of a Canadian citizen and the Indian government. Trudeau emphasized that Canada’s justice system has its unique processes and indicated that Ottawa would adopt a similar approach to the United States when reaching those points in the investigation. This follows Jaishankar’s statement in Parliament that India had responded differently to the allegations made by Canada and the United States, as Canada had not provided any inputs, unlike Washington.

In response to the allegations, Jaishankar stated at an event in Bengaluru that international relations can face challenges, and it is essential to address such concerns when raised by other nations. He added that India has sincerely informed Canada that it is open to further pursuit and investigation if Canada chooses to provide more information.

These recent developments highlight the diplomatic complexities surrounding the allegations of a plot to murder pro-Khalistan elements. They also underscore the importance of open communication and cooperation between countries when addressing sensitive issues that impact international relations and justice systems. As the investigations unfold in both Canada and the United States, India’s responses will continue to be closely monitored, signaling the need for transparent dialogue and collaborative efforts to address these allegations.
