Kremlin Continues Crackdown on Navalny’s Allies

The Kremlin has significantly intensified its crackdown on dissent and opposition figures, with the imprisonment of Ksenia Fadeyeva, an associate of the imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. Fadeyeva, a regional legislator who headed a local branch of Navalny’s organization in Tomsk, has been sentenced to nine years in prison on charges of organizing an extremist group. Her legal team plans to appeal the verdict, arguing that Fadeyeva had terminated her involvement with Navalny’s organization before it was labeled extremist by the authorities in 2021.

This sentencing follows numerous other detentions and prosecution of Navalny’s allies, indicating the relentless pursuit of Kremlin critics. The severe crackdown has been notably intensified since the invasion of Ukraine, with the majority of the Kremlin’s critics either jailed or forced into exile. The Anti-Corruption Foundation led by Navalny was designated as “extremist” in 2021, leading to the prohibition of the organization and subjecting its members to the risk of prosecution.

Ksenia Fadeyeva’s imprisonment adds to the growing list of opposition figures who have been targeted in the wake of the war in Ukraine. The nine-and-a-half-year prison sentence handed to her points to the severity of the measures being implemented against individuals associated with Navalny. Her case is emblematic of the broader assault on dissent and freedom of expression happening in Russia, signifying a concerning trend in the country’s political landscape.
