Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Fifth Phase Sees Significant Voter Turnout

The recently concluded fifth phase of Lok Sabha Elections 2024 saw a significant turnout, with an estimated 60.09% voting recorded across six states and two Union Territories. Voters from 49 constituencies participated in the democratic process, exercising their right to choose their representatives.

The polling, which ended with an estimated 60.09% voter turnout, spanned from a high of 73% in West Bengal to a low of 48.88% in Maharashtra. Several key candidates contested in this phase, including Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, Smriti Irani, and Rajnath Singh.

A voter turnout of around 59% was recorded according to data from the Election Commission. The voting took place in 49 constituencies across Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. Among the key candidates were Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, Smriti Irani, and Rajnath Singh.

The fate of several top leaders and Union ministers like Rajnath Singh, Smriti Irani, and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi got sealed in the EVMs. An overall voter turnout of 57.54% was recorded. Mumbai, Howrah, Baramulla, Ladakh, Amethi, Rae Bareli, and Lucknow were among the metros that voted amid an intense heatwave. The voting for the second phase of Assembly elections in Odisha also took place simultaneously.

Despite the high voter turnout, there were reports of violence from West Bengal and complaints of EVM malfunctioning from Uttar Pradesh. Chief Minister and Trinamul Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee’s youngest brother Swapan Banerjee, also known as “Babun,” could not cast his vote after his name was not found in the voters’ list.
