NASA has hit a further snag in their space exploration plans following helium leaks and thruster problems with Boeing’s Starliner capsule, causing a delay in the return of two astronauts from the International Space Station (ISS). They were originally set to return two weeks ago, but the return date has been pushed back indefinitely.

The agency’s decision to postpone the return comes after realizing conflicting timelines with planned spacewalks on the ISS, in addition to ongoing technical concerns with the capsule. The priority now is to thoroughly test the capsule and address its issues before proceeding with the return of the astronauts to Earth.

Astronauts Barry “Butch” Wilmore and Sunita “Suni” Williams find themselves stranded aboard the ISS as Boeing and NASA engineers work to rectify the series of helium leaks on the Starliner spacecraft that transported them to space on its first crewed mission. The spacecraft, which encountered thruster issues and multiple delays prior to its launch, seemed to have encountered more problems during the journey to the ISS, raising safety concerns.

Notably, reports have emerged that NASA and Boeing were aware of a helium leak in the Starliner before its June 5 launch but believed it was insignificant and did not pose a safety threat. This predicament has led to the cancellation of the planned departure of the astronauts, with their return now delayed until at least July 2.

With plenty of supplies available on the ISS, there is no immediate urgency to bring the astronauts back to Earth.
