Political Turmoil in Jharkhand: Hemant Soren Sent to Judicial Custody, Champai Soren Emerges as Potential Successor If Proven Innocent

2 min read

The political landscape in Jharkhand has been upended following the resignation and subsequent arrest of former Chief Minister Hemant Soren by the Enforcement Directorate. The ED had requested 10 days of custody, but after a hearing, Hemant Soren was sent to judicial custody until the next hearing. Meanwhile, the Jharkhand Governor, CP Radhakrishnan, has agreed to meet with coalition legislators amidst the ongoing political crisis. The state’s Transport Minister, Champai Soren, and loyalist of the former CM, has staked his claim to form the government, leading to speculations about his potential succession. The JMM-led alliance has also reached Raj Bhavan to stake a claim in front of the governor to form the government in the state. The ongoing power struggle has pushed the Congress to sequester its MLAs to prevent potential ‘horse-trading’ as the situation unfolds.

Champai Soren has emerged as the new face of the Chief Ministership after being named by Hemant Soren as his successor. The loyalist and JMM party leader was declared as the supremo of the JMM legislative party in a letter addressed to the ruling Mahagathbandhan MLAs in Jharkhand. The intriguing question now is why Hemant Soren picked Champai Soren as his successor. Notably, Champai Soren is one of the founding members of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and shares a strong association with Hemant Soren’s father, Shibu Soren, marking a deep-rooted trust between them. In light of this, the trust placed in him by Hemant Soren to carry forward the party’s agenda is evident.

The Congress, amid the unfolding crisis, has sequestered its MLAs in Jharkhand to prevent potential ‘horse-trading’ by rival parties. Ghulam Ahmad Mir, the party’s in-charge for Jharkhand, emphasized that the move was to prevent the BJP from carrying out such activities. This decision came after Governor CP Radhakrishnan delayed Champai Soren’s swearing-in ceremony, despite receiving the letter of support. The delay in the process took place after Hemant Soren’s resignation, subsequent arrest, and Champai Soren’s election as the leader of the JMM’s legislative party. As the political landscape in Jharkhand continues to evolve, the unfolding events are poised to reshape the state’s leadership and power dynamics.
