President Joe Biden signed the $886.3 billion National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) into law, confirming the largest raise in military basic pay in more than two decades. This landmark defense policy bill temporarily extends a controversial surveillance program, bolsters the US posture in the Indo-Pacific region to counter Chinese actions, and addresses several concerns.
The NDAA, passed by both the House and Senate, marks a significant milestone in supporting US national security and military power projection for the challenges of the 21st century. It not only authorizes a 5.2% pay increase for service members and civilian employees but also directly invests in America’s national security and military power projection.
The bill includes several provisions related to service members and their families, aiming to improve their well-being and support. Notably, it provides the largest raise for service members in more than two decades, with active-duty troops and drilling Guard and reserve members set to receive a 5.2% pay raise in January, the largest increase since 2002.
Furthermore, the NDAA includes important provisions to support the welfare of military families. For instance, it increases family separation allowance to $400 per month, providing vital assistance and recognition to service members and their families who endure the challenges of separation due to military service commitments.
However, while acknowledging the critical objectives of the NDAA, President Biden noted certain provisions of the Act that raise concerns. In a statement released by the White House, he reiterated his concerns about barring funds to transfer Guantanamo Bay detainees into the custody of certain foreign nations. Additionally, he expressed concerns about provisions that could potentially reveal highly sensitive classified information to Congress.
Additionally, the NDAA supports $841.4 billion in funding for the Defense Department, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to maintaining a strong defense infrastructure.
