Oslo-based architecture studio Snøhetta has recently completed the Vertikal Nydalen office and apartment building, a pioneering development in the heart of Oslo, Norway’s Nydalen neighbourhood. The project stands out for its commitment to sustainable design, incorporating a simplified, self-sufficient climate system and natural ventilation. It also boasts a unique design aimed at optimizing air flow through the building, which significantly reduces energy consumption.

Located near the scenic river Akerselva, Vertikal Nydalen is a testament to the transformation of its surrounding district. The building’s innovative approach to sustainability and functionality makes it an exceptional addition to the area, offering much-needed residential and business space while simultaneously enhancing the overall urban landscape.

The building’s unique architecture, featuring two angular towers, has been specifically designed to encourage natural air flow. By creating pressure differences that enable air to move through the building, Snøhetta has not only prioritized sustainability but also sought to provide panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The building’s ingenious design allows for natural ventilation, minimizing energy consumption and ensuring a comfortable, efficient living and working environment.

The site on which Vertikal Nydalen is situated, formerly known as Gullhaug Torg, served as a parking lot during Nydalen’s transition from an industrial area to a modern business hub. As part of the district’s transformation into a vibrant residential and commercial zone, the project aimed to create a car-free zone and introduce a new town square, combining a high-rise building that seamlessly integrates into its surroundings.

Officially opened on April 25th, 2024, Vertikal Nydalen is more than just a building; it’s a transformative urban project. Offering a mix of amenities and services, the building includes street-level restaurants, five floors of office space, and residential apartments, catering to the diverse needs of the community and contributing to the area’s liveliness.

In addition to its sustainable features and functional design, Vertikal Nydalen serves as a new town square for the revitalized Nydalen district. It has effectively reimagined a once underutilized space, creating a dynamic community hub that complements the modernization efforts of the district. By seamlessly integrating sustainability, functionality, and aesthetic appeal, Vertikal Nydalen sets an inspiring benchmark for future architectural and urban development projects.
