As it approaches its 75th anniversary, WDET-FM (101.9) is gearing up to significantly boost its local programming. The Detroit-based public radio station is set to embark on a revamp, introducing several new programs and incorporating more Detroit-focused content into its lineup.
Program director Adam Fox has emphasized that the move is a testament to the station’s commitment to serving the local community. “This is a signal that WDET is sending to its community that we know this city deserves a public radio station that is really devoted to what’s special and amazing and important about Detroit,” says Fox, highlighting the station’s dedication to capturing the essence of Detroit through its programming.
The changes, scheduled to roll out on February 5, will witness a surge in local programming by about 40%. Key highlights include the introduction of three new weekday programs. Led by host Stephen Henderson, “Created Equal” is set to air during the 9-10 a.m. slot, offering a deep dive into “the challenge of inequality and the promise of opportunity,” as per the station’s description. The introduction of such programs aims to engage the audience in thought-provoking discussions around issues that resonate with the local community.
Additionally, WDET has also bolstered its evening music lineup, featuring programs hosted by Detroit community members. This expansion is a nod to the station’s recognition of the vibrant musical landscape and the diverse stories that define Detroit. The programs aim to capture the essence of the city’s unique music scene, catering to the audience’s desire for authentic local content.
Mary Zatina, the Station Manager at WDET, expressed pride in the station’s responsiveness to listener feedback. “We take great pride in delivering what our listeners want from WDET,” said Zatina, reflecting on the recent survey which revealed the audience’s preference for Detroit-centric programming over national repeats. The station has heeded this call, reimagining its entire lineup to cater to the appetite for Detroit-focused content, a move that is expected to resonate with existing listeners while also attracting new audiences.
As WDET-FM readies itself to celebrate its 75th anniversary, the enhanced local programming stands as a testament to the station’s dedication to serving the Detroit community. The infusion of new programs, underpinned by a sharper focus on Detroit-specific content, signifies the station’s commitment to celebrating the city’s uniqueness and diversity through its diverse range of offerings.
This significant overhaul not only marks an exciting chapter in WDET-FM’s evolution but also underscores the station’s unwavering pledge to be the quintessential voice of Detroit, resonating with its audience and reflecting the city’s rich cultural tapestry.
